Presentation on holistic approaches to common sporting pathologies

Dr Yeo recently presented at a Sports Medicine update for General Practitioners. The program focused on a holistic approach to common sporting pathologies, covering various topics ranging from drugs in sport, head and upper limb injuries to stress fractures of the foot and ankle.

Dr Yeo presented on the topic of Achilles tendon pathology, focusing particularly on insertional vs non-insertional tendinopathy. This is a common condition plaguing middle aged runners and athletes and is also a common question asked by most General Practitioners.

Pain in this condition is localised primarily to the bottom of the Achilles close to where it attaches to the calcaneus, and is usually worse with prolonged mobility, exercise or activities that induce pushing off or going up on tip toes. There can be swelling, crepitus or associated bumps on the back of your heel. These can be investigated with a simple x-ray and an ultrasound of your Achilles, and on occasion an MRI is required to provide further detail.

It is important to be able to distinguish between the 2 insertional vs non-insertional pathologies as they are quite separate entities and treatments vary. Overall the evening was a great success, with some great feedback from those that attended.

Many thanks to the RACGP who put on a fantastic educational meeting. It was a pleasure to have the BOSS doctors involved in the education updates for General Practitioners on upper and lower limb examination with special tests, including a chance to practice examinations on each other. Our thanks to both Eleanor (RACGP) and Nadine (St Vincent’s) for their help in organising this.

Further advances in Total Ankle Replacements continue. By using CT scans and 3D printing technology, we are now able to re-create a mould of your ankle arthritis & deformity, and with the use of specific patient-specific cutting & alignment guides, further perfect the technique of total ankle replacements so that this minimizes operating time & complications, correcting your arthritis better to give you better longevity with your ankle replacement. In future, we should be able to utilise virtual reality training to help us trial our techniques before surgery, ensuring smoother operating techniques and reducing complications.
